How to trim your dogs nails
Of course being a dog groomer I would recommend visiting your local dog groomer if you want nails short as possible and not having your dog hate you. (You may also ask your vet)
Do not do this yourself if your dog is a biter! Leave it to the professionals.
If you really want to do it yourself please be gentle and focus on just trimming the point off as so not to cut the quick.(which will bleed and your dog will probably never let you touch them again!)
Another good tip is to take your pet to a room in your house they are not used to.(laundry room in my basement works for me) Your pet will be more focused on their surroundings and how to escape from what you are doing to their feet.
Before you start trimming nails you should play with your pups feet many times, weeks beforehand to get them used to their feet and nails being touched.
Hold your pet firmly, or have someone hold them for you, so you can focus on nail your going to trim.
The person holding your pet should be comforting your pet by rubbing their ears talking to them to distract them from what you are doing.
Take ahold of a paw and press gently on foot pad to expose the whole nail. Also make sure the hair is out of the way for those that have hairy paws. (the clippers will cut hair and pads too so please be careful!)
Carefully trim the point off with dog nail clippers. (they are made for a reason to cut at a certain angle) Just a warning these are sharp!
If your dog has white nails you can usually see where the quick ends, but if they are black it is a guessing game. (You can look or turn the paw upside down and have a better idea where the quick ends but have a professional do that)
In the beginning, just focus on taking the tip of the nail off until your dog gets used to you trimming the nails.
If you do cut the quick you should have a product called Quickstop. It's handy to put on the nail to stop any bleeding and will keep it from getting infected.
Once you have successfully trimmed the nails please, please, please, PRAISE your dog and tell them you are so proud of them and get super excited.
